Energy-oriented Internet I

THE PROBLEM


The consumption of natural resources is being done at a faster rate that it takes to generate. We need 1.5 Earths to continue with out actual live.
The problem has three dimensions:

  • Energy Consumption 
  • Green-House Gas (GHG) in kg CO2
  • Cost €
ICT consume the 7% of the total worlwide produced electrical energy, and not only in the equipment use, also in the manufacturing process.
The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a ratio between the useful power and the total consumption power. It's about 2 fot ICT equipment which means that for each 2 Watts of consumption we need 1 Watt  for to cool the equipment, for example, and we only use satisfactorily 1 Watt. i.e: Google was arising to move all its servers to the North Pole.

The dilemma is to achieve a sustainability situation, which compromise Social, Economic and Environment interests. But the problem is not solved increasing the efficiency of the systems. We also need to consume renewable energy with a no GHG emission. It got the drawbacks that has low yield and its not always available and applicable.



The smart grid power distribution will be the next distribution generation.
We need to difference between energy efficiency and awareness. Efficiency is to decrease the unused power consumed and energy-awareness is efficient technology that adapts it power consumption for each situation. For instance: The screen that get turned off when nobody is using the computer.
