The evolution for the next 10 years of the bandwith capacity will increase x 1000 and the energy-per-bit consumption will decrease x 100. It give us a negative balance of 10 times more power consumption. The solution will be in using optical devices that consumpts less energy than electronical devices and give us much more capacity.
By contrast we have to use 3R Regeneration systems (that demodulate, restore and send the signal) and amplifiers. But the implementation of optical devices is needed in access networks wich consumes the most part of the energy.
Another way is the energy-awareness that is to "sleep" the router or the interfaces where a model is considered with a fixed part and a variable part of consumption.
The last techniques are the Energy-aware RWA Algotithm that have the following functions:
- MinGas: minimizing GHG emissions
- MinPower: minimizing power consumption
- MinCost: minimizing costs (energy-unaware)
