Evolution of the use of internet

Nowadays we can see how new internet applications/services are emerging and how laptops, computers and smartphones are increasing data throughput at the same time that users are growing. This facts will make current keys changes.

Below some services are analysed:

• Blogs: Spain is in 5th place in Writers and in the 3th place in Readers (equal than in Really Simple Sindication RSS).
• µBlogging: which are blogs in a couple of lines. It has experimented a "boom" in a few years. Facebook and Twiter are the two big examples. They implies a important part of the internet traffic.
• Wikis: growing but not as before 2008. It's one of the most consulted portals for doubts.
• Instantaneous mails: Being replaced by µBlogs. MSN is the most used in EU, Canada and South America. In EEUU is AIM.
• Podcast: therm invented by Apple. It refers to broadcast multimedia contents and it's an important business model that Apple has well managed.
• Voice over IP: Substitute of telephone calls. Not one of the most used in Spain.
• Mashups: It's a web which combine data to create new functionalities and services, i.e: Flickr. Growing.

What's next?

In a future video services will dominate internet. Broadband networks will be needed according to Moore's Law. And probably they will be wireless networks.

Cloud computing is presented to be an important subject. It consist in offer computation services through internet. It allow the capability to store a file and real-time work over it (i.e: Dropbox & GoogleDocs). Not confuse with Grid computation which consist in connect several computers to achieve a single with a large capacity.

EU actions for development of internet[(inter)net(work)]

-Frame programs: created by EU to support and encourage research in European Research Area (ERA=System of scientific research program).

-i2010 initiative: ensure the citizen & government to make the best use of ICT (industrial competence & job creation).

-Future Networks policy drivers: eGoverment(education, healthcare, energy efficiency...). Future internet will have higher bandwith and will be for everyone and everywhere (Moore's Law). IP-Ethernet-Optical.
